What Tools Should I Use to Remove Snow from My Heat Pump?

Use: a soft broom (not a stiff brush) to gently brush snow from the unit, a leaf blower to blow light powdery snow off the coil, your hands (with gloves) to remove snow from the top grille, and warm water (not hot) on a frozen coil if needed — never boiling water.
Tools to Avoid
NEVER use: a metal shovel (will damage coil fins and refrigerant lines), a pressure washer (high pressure bends fins), ice scrapers or chisels (puncture risk), salt or ice melt (corrodes copper and aluminum), or boiling water (thermal shock can crack components).
Prevention Tips
Install a heat pump snow stand (elevated mount) that keeps the unit above snow level. Use a heat pump cover if the unit will not be used for extended periods. Clear snow from the area around the unit, not just the unit itself. Keep a broom handy for after storms.
