1. Capacitor — Most Common Heat Pump Failure
The run capacitor fails frequently in heat pumps, especially during peak summer (cooling) and winter (heating) months. Symptoms: compressor or fan motor hums but does not start. Replacement cost: $200-400. The most common and cheapest heat pump repair.
2. Contactor — Second Most Common
The contactor switches power to the compressor. Contacts become pitted from arcing over time. Symptoms: outdoor unit does not run, contactor buzzes but does not close. Replacement cost: $200-350. Inexpensive and quick to replace.
3. Defrost Board — Common Winter Failure
The defrost board controls the defrost cycle. Failure causes ice buildup and reduced heating. Symptoms: outdoor unit frozen, defrost cycle not activating, ice remains between cycles. Replacement cost: $300-600. Most common during Vancouver mild, damp winters.
