Summer Cooling

In summer, shade on the outdoor unit improves cooling efficiency by 5-10%. The unit rejects heat more easily when the ambient air is cooler. Plant shade trees (deciduous — lose leaves in winter) on the south side of the unit. Avoid enclosing the unit — shading should not block airflow.

Winter Heating

In winter, direct sun on the outdoor unit can actually help by slightly warming the coil and improving frost resistance. However, the benefit is minimal compared to the summer cooling advantage. Prioritize summer shading for net annual efficiency gain.

Optimal Placement

Install the outdoor unit on the north or east side of the home for the best balance of summer shade and winter sun. Avoid south and west sides where afternoon summer sun is strongest. If the unit is in direct sun, use external shading (awning, louvers) that does not restrict airflow.
