Why Ductless Is Ideal for Basements
Basement suites often lack ductwork and have separate heating needs from the main floor. Ductless mini-splits provide independent temperature control — the suite occupant sets their own temperature. They are more efficient than electric baseboard heaters (COP 3-4 vs 1.0 for baseboards). Installation can be done without major renovation.
Installation Considerations
The outdoor unit must be located at ground level or mounted on a bracket on an exterior wall above the suite. Line sets run from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit through the foundation wall — this requires core drilling, which should be sealed properly. Ensure the outdoor unit noise does not disturb neighbours.
Cost and Savings
Single-zone ductless for a basement suite: $3,500-5,500 installed. Annual operating cost: $300-600/year for heating and cooling (vs $800-1,500/year for electric baseboard).
