What the Contactor Does

The contactor is a heavy-duty relay that switches power to the compressor and fan motor. When the thermostat calls for cooling or heating, the contactor closes, sending power to the outdoor unit. A pitted or burned contactor prevents power from reaching the compressor.

Signs of Contactor Failure

The outdoor unit does not run despite the thermostat calling, the contactor buzzes loudly but does not close, there is visible pitting or burning on the contacts, the contactor chatters (opens and closes rapidly), or the contacts are welded closed (unit runs continuously).
