Replacement Costs

Compressor replacement costs $1,500-3,500 depending on brand and refrigerant type. Premium brands (Carrier, Trane, Mitsubishi) cost more. R-410A compressors are widely available. Older R-22 systems may need full replacement because R-22 compressors are no longer manufactured.

Replace Compressor or Entire Unit?

Replace only the compressor if: the unit is under 8 years old and the compressor has a manufacturer warranty, the coil and fan motor are in good condition, and the refrigerant is readily available. Replace the entire unit if: the system is over 10 years old, the coil is also failing, or you want to upgrade to higher efficiency.

Warranty Considerations

Most compressors have 6-12 year manufacturer warranties. If under warranty, the manufacturer provides the compressor — you pay labour ($800-1,500) and refrigerant ($200-500). Extended warranties covering labour are available from some manufacturers (Carrier, Lennox, Trane).

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
