Strata Noise Bylaws
Most Vancouver stratas have noise bylaws that apply to HVAC equipment. Typical requirements: heat pumps must not exceed 55-60 dB at the property line, units must be installed at least 3 feet from property lines unless noise-rated, and some stratas restrict operating hours for outdoor units. Review your strata bylaws before purchasing equipment.
Noise Reduction Solutions
If your heat pump exceeds strata noise limits: install a sound blanket around the compressor section ($200-500), relocate the unit farther from the property line, add vibration isolation pads to reduce structure-borne noise, build a sound barrier (must not restrict airflow — use acoustic fencing with open top), or replace with a quieter model (55 dB or less).
Choosing Quiet Equipment
Quietest heat pumps for strata installations: Mitsubishi (as low as 45 dB), Fujitsu (48 dB), Daikin (50 dB), and LG (50 dB). Look for the sound rating on the spec sheet — choose models with 55 dB or less. Inverter-driven models are quieter than single-speed because they run at lower speeds most of the time.
