UV Germicidal Lights
UV-C lights installed in the HVAC ductwork kill bacteria, viruses, and mould spores as they pass through the system. Effectiveness: kills 85-99% of microorganisms. Cost: $300-800 installed. Best for: homes with immune-compromised occupants or after mould remediation. UV lights are most effective when combined with good filtration.
HEPA Filtration
HEPA filters capture 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns and larger — including dust, pollen, mould spores, bacteria, and some viruses. Whole-home HEPA systems: $1,000-3,000 installed. Portable HEPA units: $200-800. Most residential HVAC systems cannot handle the airflow restriction of a true HEPA filter — a dedicated HEPA bypass system or portable unit is recommended.
Electronic Air Cleaners and Ionizers
Electronic air cleaners use electrostatic precipitation to capture particles. Ionizers charge particles so they stick to surfaces — but some produce ozone (respiratory irritant). Recommendation: for health-focused air purification, choose UV lights and a MERV 13 filter — they are effective, safe, and affordable. Avoid ionizers that produce ozone.
